AN EARLY love of real estate

It all began in college, when a teacher asked us if we wanted to buy her rental property…

My wife and I are high school sweethearts. We met during our last year of high school. She was new, having made the switch from a nearby school. Like most teenage couples, we became inseparable pretty quickly.

We eventually moved into an apartment while my wife (who was my girlfriend at the time) was studying at John Abbott College to become a dental hygienist. That’s where she learned that one of her teachers was selling her rental property in Kirkland. It didn’t take us long to realize that the monthly costs associated with buying that townhouse would be pretty similar to the amount of rent we were paying for our apartment.

Keep in mind, it was 2004 – home prices were not what they are today.

But all that to say, that’s when our love of real estate began.

We were 21 and we weren’t prepared at all. We didn’t have any money saved up for a downpayment and we didn’t have any financial help from our parents but we had the guidance of a mortgage broker who could perform miracles. And we had the right mindset – a mindset that may have had more to do with our young age than anything else… but, regardless of where it came from, we were decisive and unafraid. We were blindly optimistic. So, with that blind optimism (and a $6,500 RRSP loan that we used for our downpayment) – we bought our first home for $127,000.

It was a less glamorous time. I was driving a beat up 1995 Honda hatchback around the West Island while I worked the early shift at UPS and then headed in to my 9-5 job where I serviced BBQ’s. In my free time, I worked on our houses— tiling, drywalling, replacing entire kitchens and bathrooms. I would research and learn from the best. Then, I’d take on just about anything other than structural work. We’d renovate a house top to bottom, enjoy it for a couple of years and then we’d move on to the next one.

Fast forward to today, twenty years later – We live in the Sherwood area of Beaconsfield. We put down roots here fifteen years ago. Now, whenever we move, it’s usually only a couple of streets away. We’re currently living in our fifth home but it’s not just the two of us anymore; now, we’ve got two teenage sons and two (very vocal) dogs.

We’re not “flippers” – we’re way too slow for that! But, we both see tremendous value in West Island homes that have not yet been updated to the high standards of today’s buyers. We’re also picky. I’m picky about the way a home has been maintained and/or renovated from a technical point of view. And my wife, well, she’ll just never buy turn key.

We’ve seen firsthand the power of climbing a step of the property ladder with each of our moves. We’ve never seen houses as just homes or financial assets – they’re so much more than that. We see them as a means to more family experiences, a quality education for our kids, a more enjoyable retirement and security for our grandchildren. Motivated by our own experiences and successes, I reached a point where I knew that I wanted to help others do the same.

Now, as a full-time realtor, I give others the tools they need to make smart real estate decisions that will benefit themselves and their families. I’m happy to use my hands-on experience in renovation, construction and residential design to benefit my clients – whether they be buyers or sellers.

I can’t stand shortcuts. Laziness drives me nuts. I believe that convenience and excellence cannot co-exist. When it comes to my real estate business, my focus is exactly where it should be – on my clients.

My mission is to protect my clients’ long-term best interests with every decision made and every action taken regardless of the size of the transaction.
